The Tree of Knowledge

Tree of Knowledge2

Marisol D’Andrea, The Tree of Knowledge, acrylic & resin on canvas, 30 in x 30 in, May 2015

This piece exemplifies the ways of knowing, learning and growing through education. It reflects on the ways we gain knowledge of the world around us; how we grow as individuals and citizens; how we learn from our experiences with the ebbs and flow of the natural world; and how we place ourselves in this ecosystem.

Educational literature refers to the ways of knowing as perception, reason, emotion, faith, imagination, intuition, memory, and language. However, I would like to broaden this definition to include creativity, freedom, ethics, and justice. Our ways of knowing are constantly challenged and are subject to our degree of freedom to think and act with just, ethics and creativity. These ways of knowing allow us to be the citizens — or the ”trees of knowledge” — that we are today.

This painting was exhibited at the OISE Alumni Spring Reunion Art Exhibition on Friday, May 29, 2015.
