I finally took the time to see both the “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” and “David Bowie is” exhibits at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). I have to admit that I was a bit hesitant to see the Weiwei exhibition because I prefer a more traditional works of art, but once there I understood the narrative of his work and shared his political concerns regarding mainland China. Without a doubt, Weiwei is a political artist, and his work has been key to raising awareness of global injustice. The Ai Weiwei exhibition ends on October 27th, 2013 and, unlike traditional museum rules, this exhibition allows visitors to photograph the exhibit, as the message of the work speaks directly to ‘freedom of expression.’ Thus, I am sharing some of the pictures with you below.
In contrast to the Ai Weiwei show, David Bowie’s exhibition was a flamboyant historical account of Bowie’s career, music and life. This exhibition entertained the crowds and revealed a number of Bowie’s kaleidoscopic stage customs.
